So I have a Huawei Windows 11 Laptop, which I got for Christmas about 2 years ago. Today I got a notification from Fortnite ( don’t laugh ) that my driver is outdated and I thought I had to install a new one from AMD because my cpu is from AMD but my driver is actually NVIDIA. It ducked up my Sound, can’t hear nothing. We tried uninstalling. Didn’t work. We tried just changing the Audio system and did a problem check from Windows. Didn’t help. My dad tried fixing it , he updated the Laptop. I thought it was fine after , it looked fine . I didn’t touch nothing. My dad did some more stuff. Now it apparently it’s for the fucking trash, it’s cooked whatever you call it. Someone please Help me here. What should I do???

Are you able to download drivers from the manufacturer? Most manufacturers enable you to sort by your model and download the drivers specific for your laptop. Some have a utility to help you. Uninstall whatever drivers are present and install the manufacturer downloads.

Run DDU. No need to do it in safe mode. Also make sure your proper sound device is set as default. If it’s not then no sound. Disable others is usually my go to afterwards.

See if your laptop has a factory restore. You boot into it by pressing one of the F keys during the power up process. If it does, use it. It’ll bring it back to the point it was when you received it. If you don’t have that option, see if Windows has restore points that you can go back to time before this happened. If you can’t do that, don’t go to nVidia for drivers, go to the manufacturer’s website. GPUs for laptops are often tweaked by the laptop manufacturer and the drivers are tweaked too. Look for all the drivers for that model.

Sound is probably coming theiugh AMD source… Open control panel, sound, and change the default device back to whatever Probably an extremely simple fix that you’re panicking over and going overboard and doing way too much

Your laptop isn’t fucked up over a software issue.

The software is fucked up. And software being software can be erased and re-written. It ain’t hard and permanent like hardware.

Maybe the father tried (and fucked up) a BIOS update ?

Sounds to like that is what he did.

I mean even those are recoverable unless there is hardware damage, right ?

When you hear the term dual bios, it’s for situations like this. The motherboard will have a second BIOS in case a BIOS update corrupts the first one, so that the BIOS can be restored to a working version.

Yeah, do NOT throw that laptop out over software. The worst case scenario is reinstalling Windows

At my repair/used electronics/retro company i get free stuff due to this sometimes

        Customer: “you recycle electronics right?”

Me: “yes kinda depends” please dont be a giant Projection tv oh god please dont let it be one

Customer: 'i have this alienware junk and a monitor" interest piqued and slightly worried

Me: “you dont want to repair the pc we might be able to? And what type of monitor?” please please say yes

Customer: “no its total explective junk i just wanna recycle it and its a small flat one” damn no easy money but yay no giant TV

Me: “okay yeah sure ill take them thank you for ethically recycling” goes to put items in the recycle pile thinks to self wait i havent checked to see if it is actually junk… wipe drive installs windows yay it works! New drive in old drive destroyed

Me: “yay nearly free junk! … in the lan corner it goes” reduce reuse and recycle

I have no idea what was wrong with the alienware im guessing it was a driver issue.

Usually the recycle people bring in a giant projection tv and i wanna cry. Yay being ethical. At least we get free crap once a month.

Where I work we gather stuff to send to recycling too and it’s impressive the amount of big CRT TVs people still bring to get recycled every month even if we’re in 2023. We have 2 pallets with them stacked currently and wating on the recycling company to come get them

I had a similar problem when I installed nvidia drivers on my system. for some reason nvidia changed the default output sound to nvidia. On my windows 10 i had to go into the sound settings via the volume control and change the output device back to the correct one. This happened a few times when updating the drivers but its quite an easy fix. Might be worth a try.

Never, ever update your laptop drivers with software unless it’s from the original hardware manufacturer’s website. No Nvidia updating or soundboard drivers from other than the OEM website. Most likely way to handle the drivers is to uninstall the updated drivers then immediately use the OEM software/drivers and re-install them then re-boot the device. If it asks you about installing older drivers, just yes it to death. Other than that, a restore point or clean install from the restore option on the boot screen should fix it if all else fails.

Boot the laptop into safe mode If it won’t boot to windows normally. Hit F8 usually as it turns on, can be different on different laptops

Windows 7 and earlier that would work…

Now you need to hold shift while clicking Restart. But what should they do once in Safe Mode?
