Yes, I’m a grade A idiot.

So I lost my phone a year and a half ago while I was moving. I assumed it got thrown out in the trash by accident and gave up.

I was clearing out my freezer a few minutes ago and, no shit, there it was in the very back. I pulled it out. It’s thawing right now.

It was not frozen in ice or any moisture that I could tell. It is still in the case which is not waterproof.

Is there any chance whatsoever that I could salvage the data on there? How can I maximize that chance? TIA

I don’t have the time to read through the other comments, but I’ll leave my tidbit of knowledge in case someone missed something:

Do not even BEGIN to attempt to power it/charge it until it’s been at room temperature for a good long while.

Charging lipos while cold is dangerous to a surprising extent. (Never charge a phone that’s frozen, like from being out during winter. Wait for it to heat up first.)

Charging lipos that were overdischarged is also, not exactly safe.

When you eventually (after a loooong dryout) get to trying to power it up, do it with the slowest charging (lowest power) adapter possible. The slower you charge it the less explodey it will be.

It was just sitting in its case in the back of the freezer?

Hmm, I would think that it could work, although some things to consider:

    • You will really want to let this thing sit as long as possible to allow for the condensation to evaporate. There is likely WAY more condensation inside the device than on the outside. If possible to crack it (the device, not just the case) open without damaging it, removing the back panel may allow for more effective evaporation. I would let it thaw for a week in a dry, warm environment. Even then, I’m still pretty nervous that condensation will probably cause some issues when you boot up- if it DOES boot up at all.

    • I don’t know how much the battery chemistry will love being at that temperature for so long. It’ll likely need to be hooked to a power-supplying cord while you work. Keep an eye out for a lithium battery that goes nuclear when activated- if the condensate enters the sealed bag the lithium cells are in, you’ll have an instant molotov in your hand. Have a fire extinguisher DESIGNED FOR LITHIUM FIRES handy and only activate the phone in a well-ventilated environment that the phone can be safely abandoned in to complete its meltdown, if the cell explodes.

    • Buy a Tile or something, I’m begging you!

EDIT: I see it’s an iPhone 8 which is IP68 rated, so you may have a better time against condensation than I thought.

Side note, please don’t buy a Tile. You have enough mega-corporations keeping track of you at every moment of the day. You don’t need to also take Amazon in for that loop.

Sit it on top of a vent in your house maybe to let the air circulation dry it out?

Probably should have put it in the refrigerator for several days first to thaw out slowly and avoid developing condensation in the internals. Then into the 9ven placed on “warm” for dry heat and warming (NOT HOT) for a couple of hours. Then charging attempt.

Leave it to thaw for a couple days in a cool dry place. If it turns on great but you’re on a clock with a timer set to who knows what so you’ll want to be quick about backing it up

Why is nobody asking the important questions like why was your phone in the back of the freezer? Why and how? Why? What is the matter with you, and how you think and behave?

Personally; I’d put it on top of the hot water heater (or someplace consistently warm but not hot) do not try charging it until it has had time to clear any condensation (like a week as previously stated)
