For Christmas, I ordered my son a Horizon 2 Pro from Starforge. It’s got an Intel Core i5-12400F and a rtx 4060 Ti. I’m wondering whether I should get him a 1080p or 1440p monitor? I myself use a 4080 on 1440p but I’m really not sure if a 4060 Ti can handle it. What do you guys think? This might be a dumb question but thought I’d chance it and ask Reddit, as I am very new to PC gaming. Thank you!

I dont see anyone saying this but it depends on the size of the monitor too, if he likes 24 inch then 1080p should suffice, 27 inch would preferably be 1440p and 4k for anything larger than that. I find that 1080p 144hz-240hz would be best for budget. But if you have money to spare, do get the 1440p 144hz as it seems to be the sweet spot for price and performance.

I wouldn’t recommend 4K for gaming, still at this point, cause there’s still existing games and some new ones that don’t fully support it. But I support the mark that 27" and over, go with 1440p.

There’s a lot of absurdity in here trying to say a 4060 isn’t 1440p ready.

What the fuck are they smoking? For that I have no answer.

But what I can tell you is I’ve ran 1440p on high-to ultra at 50-100 or more FPS (with your same processor) on Fortnite, WoW, and Jedi: FO, among others, all on a very used and dated 1070 TI for years now, and have a 4060 on the way that is benchmarked at 53% more powerful than my dated card.

These people saying 4060 can’t do 1440p either mean to express some inaccurate nuanced take that it’s not the best 4K card- or they are factually full of absolute horse shit.

But your kid a 1440 monitor.

Putting a 1080p on that processor and a GPU would be downright offensive.

That’s like saying “my son has a Lamborghini, and I’m wondering if I should bicycle wheels on it?”

Not a common suggestion, but 2560x1080p ultrawide, either 29" or 34". The immersion is awesome and it’s a good intermediate between 1080p and 1440p, and will work amazingly with his 4060ti

Imo around 27" is perfect for gaming, 1440p is a noticeable improvement over 1080 and that pc will be able to handle it fine, go for at least 120Hz regardless of resolution. It depends on your son and their age if you go for HDR, most people probably don’t care about it.

If on a budget 1440 at 27”, if not then 3840 at 27”, Dell make amazing screens in the 200-400 range, have fun gaming with your family

It can definitely handle it. Ive got a 3060ti and a 1440p 165hz monitor and it pushes it over 100hz in even the most demanding games.

I feel like anything having to do with resolution I tend to wait until new years instead of Christmas…

I have 2 1440 monitors on my 980ti. Go higher res. You can always lower settings to match but for lower spec games it’s nice to have.

The 4060ti 16GB is a borderline 1440p card for modern titles.

It averages 75 FPS 1440p Ultra on the Toms Test Suite. This means that once you do all of the slider tweaks you can expect a roughly 100 FPS experience on these games.

For older games and esports titles it will do fine.
