I got a laptop last year and it’s a HP with intel core i5 7th gen and it’s always been slow, but lately it’s been getting even slower and I had some people look at it and they said they couldn’t find anything wrong with it. Plus I just now went and closed my chrome browser and there were bing searches for Belize that I didn’t make because I don’t use bing. I’ve never used the laptop for anything but homework and the only person who had more access is a guy from a computer shop who set up the system for me because I’m not Tech savvy. I’m not sure if he did it though because he set it up a couple years ago. And non of my classmates use it because I keep it in my bag at all times and it’s password protected. The CPU or Disk will also randomly jump to 100% and I don’t know why(which is probably the reason it’s slow) Also I’m sorry if I used the wrong flair but I have no idea what they mean. Thanks for any help on my issue.
First, you have a very old cpu there, so think about just getting a newer computer if at all possible. Even a used one of a newer vintage will be fine. Second, if you can’t do that, hard drives are absurdly slow and SSDs (new digital drives) are very cheap so have that replaced.
Lots of reasons for those random times when it gets very busy and uses 100%, slowing you down. Windows does all manner of things in the background, housekeeping tasks. For instance, it indexes all the files on your drive so you can find them when you search. Chrome updates itself. Windows updates itself. Etc. All those things will improve with a newer faster machine with a faster CPU and SSD.
Finally, don’t have too many browser tabs open at once. The very newest Chrome release shows you how much memory each tab takes, and it’s frightening. Depends on the site, but more than a few take 1GB each (that’s a lot). This will easily exceed your memory, at which time Windows has to use hard drive space for the overflow, and that will slow you down a lot with a spinning hard drive.
Like they already said reinstalling windows with a USB drive will help. But you will lose all your drivers so I recommend you use a software that scan the PC and automatically finds them such as touslesdrivers (french). I personally use it
Seventh-gen i5 should be reasonably usable still. I had a 6th-gen i5 as my work laptop until I gave it to my mom recently.
When the computer is slow, have you looked in task manager to find out what’s at the top of CPU usage?
You can always try resetting the computer (essentially reinstalling Windows) and see if that helps. You probably don’t need to make the USB drive. Go to settings > Updates > Recovery > Reset this PC.
(This is from memory, but it’s pretty close.)
It will ask if you want to do a cloud reinstall. Choose yes. This will download Windows from Microsoft instead of using the factory image that came with your HP, so bloatware will be minimal. Also choose to keep your files; that way it will uninstall your programs and reset Windows to defaults but it will not erase your documents and downloads.
Do make a backup of anything important though, if you have somewhere to store it.
Sounds like bloatware and it being old af…
Fresh install of windows. Create a usb boot drive. Just be sure to keep all the crapware off.
If you want fast upgrade to atleast 9th or 10th gen…
Can laptop cpus be upgraded?
Most can not. The rare ones that can it’s not an easy process
So you are worried because you saw a window with a bing search you didn’t remember making? It easily could have been a mistype or misclick in the taskbar search. I think you’re over thinking this.
It sounds like it has a hdd, Ssd will fix the slowness.
The bing search sounds like if you accidentally click on the info part of the windows 10/11 lock screen - it will open a bing search or page from that info.
Get an SSD. Look for a slot using your model number, look at browser extensions for things you don’t want, and programs list
Bing search for Belize might have happened when you click on the windows login wallpaper. They like to feature cool stuff and one click leads to a Bing search.
This. Microsoft loves to launch Edge and Bing for everything.
Gotta get people to use it somehow.
The bing search bar was a Windows update lol because Microsoft wants you to use bing so bad
Is your password ***************? If so, yes, you’ve been hacked.
I have an Inspiron from like 10 years ago that runs slow now because of mandatory windows upgrades which cause the system registry to constantly be running and max the disc usage. Laptops without SSDs should not be running windows 10, sorry to say. Microsoft did not care about older hardware. They’re a bunch of pricks.
What is your ip?
Bing search for Belize could be from clicking on the text from the featured Windows lock screen picture
It’s unlikely you’ve been hacked. Given the age of your computer, I wouldn’t be surprised if the only storage onboard the machine is a 3gbps SATA HDD. I would strongly recommend upgrading to a more current laptop, and preferably an upgradeable type like those from Framework, as the ability to easily and quickly replace individual parts as they fail for cheap by yourself will doubtless prove invaluable.
