This drive failed me circa 2013, and I’ve kept it to remind me of the importance of data management.

It had a wedding on it.

I want to know if anyone has any insight on how to power the disk without attaching that separate attachment (pictured)

I wanted to try plugging the SATA cable straight into the computer, but the drive is powered through the power cable attached to the external piece.

I’m also a complete novice, so excuse my ignorance.

Device (WD 3TB HDD, Nasware 2.0, WD30EFRX)

Usb 3 HDD enclosure. Piece of cake.

Or even a HDD dock if it’s something you might need in the future.

That’s an ordinary SATA Drive. They use two connectors located next to each other. A SATA data connnector and a SATA Power connector. If there is something that plugs into a USB port attached to the drive itself, like a short cable, remove it and the drive should be able to be powered directly from the PC.

If you have or know someone who has a SATA drive dock, both of these connectors slide into female connectors in the dock at the same time. That device will have a power supply and USB port you can attach to your comptuer’s external USB port.

Those NAS devices are just boxes with a regular HDD inside.

This has happened to me at home, and lately at my work.

I use UFS Explorer recovery software to read the special partitions the hard drive has and to copy the files somewhere else. After that, you can just format the hard drive and use it on your computer as a storage space. Or get a hard drive rack and place loose hard drives there.
