My girlfriend just updated her phone and wanted to see what the new call screen looked like so when I was with her I called her. When she answered she put her phone on speaker and all we heard were two people talking in a different language.

Anyone know why or how this happened? Hacked Apple account, or just a random coincidence? Thanks!

Crossed lines. Used to happen a lot. I assume if the tech is still being used at some point it could still happen. Or, there’s a modern equivalent bug you encountered.

That’s surprising, because most digital phone signals are encrypted since 2g. It should not happen. But maybe, some base stations are decrypting the signal, but I don’t know why they would do it.

Yeah, especially in old tech that doesn’t get updated until it dies. Like repeaters in remote locations.

Repeaters for what? The LTE backbone? Shortwave repeaters? Cell phones don’t work like shortwave radios

No they arent. Not unless you’re on a landline in a VERY old jurisdiction. Cell tower site switching is all done on either an erricsson BB6630 or newer ericcsson/Nokia equivalent. Switching is done automatically based on the site file uploaded to said device. Even 3g has been decommissioned in 90% of markets in the US, and where you can get it, it’s running legacy firmware on newer hardware, for lack of a better term. There aren’t even any “lines” to switch anymore. It’s all fiber optics to the radios.

The dude you replied to already covered that.

Yeah cross talk shouldn’t happen cell phone to cell phone. It’s fiber from the Telco to the transmitter then encrypted from the transmitter to the phone. Even between providers it will be fiber. The only time it’s copper anymore is to the house and that is currently being phased out. Maximum is from the local switching until to the house. Maybe just maybe if you live in a very remote area from that switching unit to another is still copper but they almost certainly are going to be replacing it to put up a tower near by.

If the cell phone area was “tapped” using a stingray it would just record everything to PC so no way to cross connections. But if someone made their own they could cross the lines only on purpose.
