Hi, this post might be annoying with all of you experts on here, sorry but I’m feeling so sad. I started a course of music production this spring. I like singing and sometimes write lyrics and sing melodies in my phone.I love music and singing. I want to be a songwriter and make songs for others. I started the course with 0 ecperience. I have very intense ADD and am recovering from a burnout. And i just cabt seem to focus and i get so frustrated with myself. I received cubase with the course and a book. Everything in the book is written so difficult for advanced people i just dont know where to start. Does anyone have tips for someone who is just starting out? I only have a macbook. I am going to borrow a midi controller from a friend next month. I dont play any instruments. How do I make a song in cubase. I guess i do have to purchase a microphone. And do i need to purchase a soundcard? Anyhow what are the best ways to get started other than watching turorials? How do I advance quickly? Any tips or thing i should do or know? Maybe hacks? Tips for cubase for dummies? Or maybe good websites books or videos?
All info will be greatly appreciated i feel very overwhelmed and just so sad i dont understand the book. Made be unmotivated and just want to quit and cry. I need to finish the course in 6 months or pay a fine and hand in a song i create before then. I need help. Sorry for bothering you pros.
YouTube Videos are good for learning. Find videos that show the screen while they are explaining things. Just learn a little more each day, and understand you won’t learn everything overnight. It takes time, so enjoy the process.
Check out the tips series from The Electric Rose on YouTube.
I’m not sure how possible it is to share a desktop session with audio over hangouts/zoom etc, but I’m sure some of us could give you a basic intro. What timezone are you in?
As for equipment, you will likely need a keyboard / MIDI controller, a soundcard with mic input, some headphones (so you can monitor yourself and the music whilst recording vocals, without the mic picking up audio from speakers), optionally some speakers and of course a mic.
Thank you so much i think thats all i need just some help to get started. How sweet of you toffer i thought no one would reply on my post 🥹 I live in the netherlands
I’m in Finland - so I think one hour ahead of you. Feel free to PM me any questions and if/when you feel ready to be walked through the basics, maybe we can arrange a time to share my screen and talk through things.
What version of Cubase are you using?
Im sending you a message! Thats so sweet!
Maybe. If your budget allows, you start off with something even more user friendly, like FL Studio…
It also sounds like you need to learn more about home recording and prodcution, and not just Cunase or any DAW. Find some good audio rexoding books and videos, and watch those. I’m them, you will also learn concepts that will actually make navigating Cubase easier.
…and refuse to let your ADD beat you. Don’t let your challenges become unclimable walls.“The Price is the Price,” and sometimes you just gotta do what you gotta for what you want. Start by finding yhe motivation to do what we it takes to get to where you want to be skill wise, and healthily-obsess over it.
I will do my best. I have a year to finish this course and hand in my end project a full song thats good on the technical aspects. I still know nada didnt understand the book, watched some tutorials found them hard, tried the book again panicked cried and left it to collect dust. Now i only have 6 months left. I need to do it just scared to fail. My last education was also from home due to covid and difficult so i kinda have ptsd i think. But thank you for advice im going to change my nindset and go for it! Lots more information on this thread then in the entire textbook i got.
Go for it, brother! Good luck!
I found Jeff Gibbons particularly helpful. Step by step “let’s make a song” intro to the cubase sound environment. Dom Sigales is great as already mentioned. Interface gets sound into the computer ( scarlett, steinberg, and others), microphone and keyboard connects to that get sounds on to a track. Headphones are fine to start. Follow Jeff Gibbons’ step be step process and you will be getting a good start. Have fun and don’t worry. You can’t break anything.
Thank you i will be having a look at those!
Hey man! Thanks for sharing this here. Very recognizable for me with ADD/ADHD.
Just to explain my post. You mentioned your ADD and burnout and I felt the urge to tell you my story. For me is creating music now like painting with all different kinds of materials you can imagine. But before a process to perform 100% accurate combined with fun and expression having many years lessons playing trumpet. Perfection can be a trap in music production having ADD is what I experienced. I started using cubase about 7 years ago having no knowledge about producing at all, digital and with very holistic software like cubase which is capable of creating professional productions so the sky is the limit man! At that moment I started I just was knocked down because off a pretty serious burn out. I went back to my old passion, music.
For a fresh start, I would advice you:
Start watching YouTube (Dom Siglas and Chris Selim, Talking Leaf) or to producers like Jonas Aden and many more young enthusiastic producers (me m46)to learn about cubase or creating songs or other tracks. Mary spender can has nice videos to get inspiration from. Avoid marketing videos 😉 and do not buy all those plugins they offer because most of them are in some way or are already included in cubase. You don’t need extra😉 for now. And if you buy them only do that when they are at exceptional sale up to 80 % and sometimes even more 🤷♂️😲🤫🤪😃 Read the plug in reference to get some insight on the plugins and what they are capable of. Avoid the use of to many plugins per channel even though they are so much fun 🤩 to play with. Play with the software and use the samples included to have fun with it on audio tracks and sampler tracks. Play with the chord pads and the chord track and create in an easy audible way your first nice chord progressions. You can drag the chords in an instrument track and it will play it.
Play with retrologue synth to find out how a synth works. Watch some videos about gain, eq and filters, gain and compressors. Most important is to have fun and know that sometimes it can be frustrating not to be able to create what you had in mind. Just doodle/ draw some sound in midi and audio. You can save your best ideas as templates to use them as starting point for your next doodles or projects.
You can use the voice recorder from your iPhone to record audio and import those recordings on your Mac book and import in your projects. Do not hold it in your hand. A microphone and an audio interface are useful for recording your voice or other sounds and to connect an electric guitar or a piano for example. Midi controllers like mixers, pad controllers or midi keyboards can be connected to your computer by usb. Finding the right controller is a very personal thing I think but what didn’t work for me were controllers that only control a bit of a process and those I didn’t use. And for mixers for me only motorized faders work
If you like to play with real recordings you can subscribe to remix contests like SKIO and have multitrack projects to experiment with.
I personally love to play with my micro studio but have had ADD hyperfocus moments and lost myself in learning fast which is possible because of all the info on the internet and watched everything I could find about the WHOLE SUBJECT which is very huge and asked for a lot of ear training and knowledge or experience in writing chords melodies and rhythms. Sound engineering knowledge and experience learning from videos which are a great fun to watch on the couch, toilet etc and it was addictive to watch and I wanted to try everything I’ve seen. My head became crowded because of my new hobby and my ADD. With zero experience, just be patient and have fun learning, creating, doodling. For me Cubase feels like a musical instrument as well by itself. Depending how you use it. Discuss with yourself if you have the time to learn two “instruments” in the same time. With your mouse you can draw your thoughts on the piano and drum roll. Or use some of the included I read the manual completely to understand the terms and know my options within the software. This is pretty useful. You don’t have to learn everything at once. Google them later.
Just enjoy and surprise yourself with your new hobby. This was my experience and I love my hobby although I (had to accept that) after many years I ‘m still not good at it but I love doodling with sound and expression my thoughts in sound. And now after trying 7 years I begin to be able to translate my thoughts into midi and be able to mix a bit. I’m not still not good but will become better. Am happy with own progression and expression abilities. But don’t lose yourself in leaning day and night and focusing on the best results directly from start …
Thank you for taking the time to write such an informative and heartfelt message. Im just so not technichal but i really hope once i get a hang of the basics my hyperfocus kicks in too. I love singing and music so it should! Im going to watch s lot of stuff and practice and hope for the best! Thank you!
Just try to enjoy it and don’t worry if it takes you time to learn how to use it. You won’t get it overnight - and that’s fine. A lot of us have been using this software for 10-15 years+. It’s like learning an instrument - even if you read about the techniques, it’s still going to take time and practice for them to really work for you.
Also, if you start to get frustrated with it or not feel like doing it, just stop and come back to it later. It’s supposed to be enjoyable, so don’t force it.
Even if you spend 30 mins and start to feel fed up, just leave it and come back the next day and do another 30 mins. You’ll get far more done in short bursts of productivity than in long sessions of feeling frustrated. Eventually you’ll start to find your flow with it and you’ll end up spending 4 hours without knowing where the time has gone - it’ll just feel easy and natural, as you won’t be thinking about how to use the software and can just be creative.
I’d also really recommend trying to learn an instrument. Having a basic understanding of which note shapes work together will really help you. It is music software after all. Just try and learn some basic songs to a metronome on your keyboard.
If you don’t want to go this route and are getting frustrated - there are AI “helpers” you can use, which suggest chord progressions and melodies. I’ve never used them personally, as I like the creativity - but it is a route you could go down.
Here’s some examples: https://youtu.be/V1Q320KU62c?si=Djt3EzgczzwWncmJ
You could also find some free samples websites and just arrange them in the sequencer.
Just play around, have fun making cool noises, and eventually you’ll start creating something you’ll like.
Thank you gor these encouraging words just what i needed i need to let go of the pressure and just start having fun!
No worries! Have fun!
Here’s a full EDM production tutorial I did a couple years back. https://youtube.com/playlist?list=PLNMi1rxJQB0zUkBIQLjx8GyB2OwDX5Y5T&si=Wn_l1uSQ0RePSI8u
Ooh i will watch it thanks!!
Thank you all for your sweet and helpful messages! I thought nobody would reply cause im such a noob, but you truly helped someone out who was really stuck and about to quit this community gives me hope and excitement again. Thanks a lot guys! 🙏🏼

Just start having fun and learn what you find interesting. There is no right or wrong. You can start of with a small soundcard like a scarlett with a simple microphone. Make it as simple as you can or you can drown in the information. Especially if you have adhd. Don’t raise the bar to high and don’t do everything at once. YT is a great teacher. I think better than books because its practical. Videos about the basics. Dom Sigalas has plenty of vids to get you up to date.
