Just like the title suggests, looking to build a new computer in the coming days and I want to finally break free from Reaper and start using Cubase.

That being said, my current CPU is a Ryzen 7 3800XT which has been fine for all of my shitty rough mixes and demos. But I want to switch to Cubase, because I like the workflow of it and I feel like Reaper, while generally pretty simple, can be a little stark and bland and even unintuitive at times with it’s plugins.

I would like to stick with AMD as I do a fair bit of gaming but was wondering how well Cubase works w/ AMD CPUs in comparison to Intel. Any input is greatly appreciated, thank you in advance.

And just in case anyone is thinking about suggesting it; no, I’m not gonna go buy a Mac. And no, I’m not interested in building a separate computer for audio production and a different computer for gaming, it is simply out of the question.

I went with Intel Core i9-13900KF a few months ago, and it made a huge difference. I can drop my latency super low on the ASIO with 96khz and still run tons of VST and plugins without any issues.

I have a 5950x, the cpu usage meter barely moves no matter how many tracks and plugins I have going. We use the same CPU for the tracking computer and it tracks like 28 at a time, no problem and no latency. Usually I’m tracking “live” with the cabs in separate rooms with the band on phones in the drum room, seems to work best like this so they can get the right groove going and still allows for subs/punch-ins

Agree, Reaper is light on the cpu but its bland and unintuitive looks really turns you off. I’m alternating between cubase and reaper lol. Stuff of nightmare.

i bought this a while back and use it for gaming and audio production… https://imgur.com/a/2gBcOUY

upgraded the graphics card once cyberpunk came out and while it’s not as amazing as some peoples systems it’s a real workshorse…final price was £1915

My HP laptop with AMD Ryzen 7 5700U and 16 GB RAM, till now can handle a project with about 30+ tracks of heavy VSTs from Kontakt plus other insert plugins to each one of them which surprised me to be honest.

I’m also looking for the same so thanks for the question.

I want to buy Ryzen 7 5700G with Vega 8. I’ve heard that the DAW doesn’t care for GPU.

I have a 5600X in my Win and it is not enough. It does finish some songs, but it struggles with others. 5800X is the minimum for serious work.

Cubase should, in theory, work better with AMD than Intel as they state the Intel big-little architecture does not play well with it yet.

I was thinking of going with maybe a 7900X3D, if not then I would end up getting like an i7-13700K or something like that.

My 5600x is the biggest p.o.s ever, Rog strix mobo, and basically it’s unusable after 2 years of troubleshooting

I currently run a 3700X on a home build (I skimped on a cheap B450 Motherboard) and am looking to upgrade to a new machine because even with 8 cores I slow down when I start running Arturia’s Lexicon reverb, a few instances of Pigments, and some of the heavy usage VSTs like the CS80 and the OBX. With heavy bus processing I have to use all the slow asio settings and then pray, otherwise I’m bouncing VST tracks to audio which defeats the purpose of a VST imho.
So I either get a 5900X with a new motherboard (PCIe 4 capable) or else go for a new machine. I’m currently looking at a Minisforum UM790 with a Ryzen 9 7940HS, 32G DDR5 and a 1 TB M2 for €710. The 5900X is a faster CPU but the full upgrade is just under €600 and I still dont’t get DDR5. So it looks like I will go down the mini PC route as an xmas present to myself and dedicate the old machine to gaming.
In the past I would not think twice about buying a Digitakt or a MPC One so now I’m not going to think twice about tooling up with a Ryzen 9.

I am personally looking to get the 5900X as well. It is what I have deemed enough for my workload. The 5950X seems just overkill.
