For the past 10 years or so I’ve had a PC hooked up to a dumb TV to stream my TV. Now I’m officially old and have kids in elementary school. The PC is finally unbearably slow but now I have no idea what to replace it with, or frankly even what my options are. Smart TV? Casting Stick? new PC? some newfangled option i don’t even know what to google?

you can stream from a pc to VLC for android app so any android box or fire stick will do the job for you. you just have to turn on media streaming within the pc you want to stream from (and have files to stream, take that folder, right click, properties, sharing, etc) and it will show up as a folder within the network section on VLC.

I just got a 55” Toshiba FireTV that took about 2 minutes to setup after plugging it in and signing into our Amazon account.

It cost only $280 and is 4K with all sorts of fancy tech. I don’t understand how someone would spend $2k on a TV these days. I just don’t see a $2000 different between the top end ones and the one I just bought.

My first HDTV was a 50” rear projector LCD (so it was like a foot deep at the base, but was super light) bought in 2005 and cost $2,200 from Best Buy.

I was recently in a similarish situation.

OLED is the best TV panel you can get. I would go with Sony or LG You can see more suggestions on r/4ktv

I don’t like built-in Smart stuff. I prefer the boxes. If you have an iPhone, Mac, Airpods or other definitely get an Apple TV, otherwise go with the Chromecast or Roku dongles for basic stuff. If you want all the features then get a Shield Pro

Do you know the specs of your pc? Important things would be processor, ram (amount in gigabytes), and storage space. Likely just upgrading to an ssd would solve your pc dilemma

I would never do without my HTPC. Just too nice to be able to do everything from one box so easily.

If you want it to last, buy/build another PC. Or even just upgrade your current one. An ssd can do wonders for an old computer.

I do the same as you, use a PC with a TV as the giant monitor basically. I would just get a new PC personally. So much more you can do with it.

I would go for an Apple TV box if you’re in the Apple ecosystem at all. If you’re anti-Apple I’d look for something similar from Android. Just stay away from the streaming sticks, my friends that have them always seem to have issues with the sticks having sluggish performance or straight up freezing up (Firesticks seem especially bad).

A PC can also come in handy though. I built one in a portable Mini-ITX case that’s easy to move to the living room if I want. Nice for when you want to go to streaming sites that may not have apps yet, can also play games off Steam or the Epic Store, etc.

Smart TVs collect and sell your user data. Apple TV bypasses that and is a much better UI and you can watch the same things on other Apple devices.

My Samsung LCD TV screen died after only 3 years. I replaced it with LG C3 OLED. It’s a wonderful picture and good sound.

Look at LG TV models with magic remotes. Very cool and intuitive interface, and a mouse-like pointer for controlling it - point the remote at the tv and a little arrow moves around on the screen. Very quick/responsive. I have 4 LG’s varying from 2 - 9 years old, 55-75 inch screens. All work as well today as when I bought them, and zero issues with them. Also, one is lower end, one medium, and two high end. Not much difference between them - they all work great and I would buy any one of them again. Highly recommend looking at LG.

I use a self-built HTPC, which I built a year or two ago. It will stream whatever I want without hoping there’s an app for it, it has a blu-ray drive for my old discs (and for ripping old PC games to move over to my main machine, which lacks a disc drive), and it pulls double-duty as a data back-up server I can access from anywhere on my home network.

I challenged myself to build one that would use less wattage than my old Xbox One, which is what previously served my TV needs, and to use only second -hand parts except for storage and the PSU. It was a fun little project and it works really well!
