My dad is an IT guy, and for years now, he’s been telling me that he installed some software to monitor my history, even when I use incognito. I didn’t believe him, because if that was true, I’d be dead by now. But two days ago, he told me he added some software for real this time. I didn’t believe him, until I heard him tell our guests about this software. I checked my laptop for recently opened and installed apps and couldn’t find anything, I don’t see anything suspicious on the task manager. (I do not know much about all of this stuff) What should I do? Is he bluffing?

You won’t see any app on his laptop because he’s viewing and managing it from the internet browser by remotely connecting to the Router through an internet browser.

So no he’s not bluffing, incognito might hide the history for others using your PC but all that info still passes through the router and it is viewable by ISP and router admin. And even if he wasn’t viewing the router he could easily just ask the ISP for a report on what sites are being visited on your network.

So yeah your dad knows what porn sites you’re visiting.

I could say you could get around this by using your phone’s data connection but he’s likely paying for that too so he can just ask your Cell Service Provider for what porn sites you visit.

Dad can also use parental control on Windows. You activate it and you can see all the website your “child” visited .

If he is IT, then all he needs to do is monitor all internet user traffic from the modem - you cannot hide from that at all - other than, use a different internet/network.

That is just the easy way. There are MANY other ways that are waaaay more sneaky.

He could very well be bluffing. The reason I say that is because, well, it worked. Especially now that you know that it wouldn’t be that difficult for him to do.

If he has full access to the terminal a few automated scripts would really be all it would take. The fact that he controls the router too means that even if he doesn’t it wouldn’t be hard.

Use encrypted DNS servers like NextDNS and use a VPN like NordVPN or Proton VPN.

Just Google creepy stuff like: „how to hide a dead body“ or also start sentences in the search bar like „how should I tell my dad that I“. Some classics depending on your gender would be „help I’m pregnant“ or „how to find out if she was really on birth control?“ or whatever would drive your dad insane. And then you wait

All incognito mode does is not save anything to your browsing history. Any kind of keylogger or anything that monitors the actual network traffic will see everything.

    Key logger Tracks every keystroke.

Windows has a teach me tool. It creates a step by step guide for what you are doing, complete with screenshots. Other programs do that just as easily.

So, yes, lots of ways to do it.

Certainly. Why would he bluff? He knows how and I’m more than sure that with an IT background he would prefer to

You could use a vpn that supports wire guard and tunnel it through https. But that’s probably a bit technical. If you have an android phone he may have installed an app like Cerberus, or perhaps he has a pihole installed on the network and can monitor your traffic that way.

If your using your phone not connected to the WiFi network he won’t be able to see the traffic.

What would work for you in this case would be to use a HTTP or HTTPS proxy.

It it possible?I believe it’s possible, but as most have mentioned, it’s probably easier to monitor network traffic than spy on your computer.
