My brother downloaded a virus on my dad’s computer and the hackers got into the software and changed the email. My dad said he can get into the account but doesn’t know what to do from there as he can’t do anything. I dont know if he has any backups. Anyone know what to do?

I bet he just can’t see his data. I would have someone pull the drive and plug it into another computer via cable and check out the users folder

Use a bootable linux distro on a flash drive and boot from that. Most windows autorun files don’t affect linux, so it should be relatively safe to transfer important files over

The hackers got into what software?

If he can get into the account he should be able to change the email back.

I have a feeling this was not explained properly. By chance do you mean that when he logs on to windows his files are gone? If so I would first think it is a corrupt account, which is common. The files are there but it takes a bit to fix. This is just a guess with the limited info.

No back ups? One of the only ways to save this if he doesn’t have the files saved on the cloud or on another server

I cannot count the number of times people told me they have a virus when it was just them agreeing to every notification, email, text, and everything possible and blame a virus for shitty performance or programs that were allowed to do whatever they wanted. Back in the day I remember when everything wanted to add a toolbar, I saw people had 2 inches of actual screen to look at web pages, and they thought that was ok.
