Anyone who was able to use jellyfin should have switched to jellyfin by now. I know there are some people who’s audience can’t… Idk… Make an account. I don’t remember the excuses.
If your data passes through plex’s servers you should assume they can collect data on what you’re watching. If they aren’t now, they could with an update. It always confused me how data hoarders used Plex. Do you really want a third party peeking at your stuff?
Honestly, a part of me hopes Plex does tell streaming services and movie studios how much of their stuff I watch without paying them a dime. Otherwise they would have no clue how much money they’re screwing themselves out of with their shitty practices. I want them to lose sleep over it
Steams approach is a wonderful demonstration of the whole “piracy is a service issue.”
If there was a store where you could buy movies for a couple bucks on sale (kind of like a digital blockbuster) it would really help to curb piracy. Though that’s probably because movies are generally multi million dollar endeavors and steam has a lot of indie games with a budget under $1000.
Still though. The point stands. Even big AAA games go on sale. Just sell the movie. Let people buy Avatar for $1, its over ten years old.
Everything I read about Plex vs. Jellyfin basically says that Plex is better, but Jellyfin is free. And that’s generally the end of the discussion. The biggest gripe about Plex is that it costs money to get access to all their features.
But I bought the Lifetime Plex Pass ages ago (when it was very affordable) and I’ve really enjoyed it. For that one-time fee, I’ve had full access to their entire suite for years now. I tried Jellyfin for a while, but the lack of features and configurability made it difficult for me to really get into.
For the record, I share my media library with friends and family and it was a mess to manage with Jellyfin. Plex has run much smoother for remote sharing, especially when numerous people are trying to access my server at the same time.
I think the only thing that would turn me away from Plex is if they revoked my Lifetime Plex Pass, or made me pay for additional features. With access to all their tools and configurations, it’s been the better product of any home streaming service I’ve used so far.
And yes, I know I’m saying all this in a Jellyfin community and will likely get skewered alive for not praising Jellyfin, but this place is kind of an echo chamber, so I’m humbly offering a differing opinion based on my experiences for the discussion. Please feel free to tell me all the ways I’m wrong.
Your opinion is valid and your lived experience informs your tendencies in that regard. To clarify the point, this is about users’ privacy hygiene and the risk to such that Plex seems to pose at this point, and anytime in the future, at their whim. (hint: it always has) 🤓
Fuck Plex, Jellyfin is great.
How are the Roku apps for Jellyfin?
Comparable to Plex, imo
