I hope this is the right sub. I have what I hoped was a simple question, but I don’t know what I’m doing really, so I’m not finding a simple answer on google. Through what was probably sheer luck, I figured out port forwarding about a year ago to host a foundry server for my online gaming group. I’m now trying to set up a private minecraft server to play with my friends. Since I won’t be running the two programs at the same time, but that port is already open, can I set both things to use the same port? I don’t know if I could figure out the port forwarding process again, so someone please ELI5 if I can or not. Thanks!

Yeah, sure- you just won’t be able to use both at the same time. Trying to run the second program will fail because the app won’t be able to bind to the port.

Ports are like library books- two people can’t check the same book out at once.

So just run only one at a time and you’ll be fine!
