My notebook needs a CMOS battery, but the CMOS battery is in a yellow ”shell“ and connected with black and red wires to the mainboard. Could I technically just take out the cell out of the yellow thing and replace it with a battery cell of the same kind (like CR2032s, CR2016s, etc.)? Or do I have to buy the entire thing for my model? Because just replacing the cell would be cheaper and easier to get.

While you could probably try to take it out of there, my guess is that it’s soldered onto the wires themselves. It’s certainly possible, but may just be easier to order a new cell - just check that the connector looks identical, as they are likely not as “Universal” as this one claims they are.
