Hi!
So I got this mid/high end pc a few months ago, didn’t have any problems for the first few months, now for the past month, if i’m playing a game for long enough and then i exit it OR tab out, i go back to an incredibly slow desktop where i essentially can do nothing. Initially thought it was drivers, updated them and no change, all windows updates completed, I’ve tried turning hardware acceleration off, every time I check resource manager and task manager once this starts happening it basically tells me nothing is being overloaded. I’ve got a fair bit of disk space left too so i doubt it’s my disk freezing up. This happens mostly with WoW, Dota and Fortnite, doesn’t really happen with rocket league though no matter how long I spend on it.
Specs:
CPU - AMD Ryzen 5 5500
GPU - RTX 3060ti
Storage - M.2 NVME 1TB
RAM - 16GB
OS: Windows 11
Power supply - 650w
lmk if i’ve missed any obvious fixes or left out any details
If the game has HDR enabled and Windows doesn’t, it will take a second to disable. That’s one thing worth checking.
Most of “tabbing out is not smooth” genereally is down to the game. If you run games in a full screen window instead of “exclusive fullscreen” it can help with this.
If you only have 1 monitor, you might feel there isn’t much functional difference between “fullscreen window” and “fullscreen”, because you may be tabbing to another window that is also filling the screen. But once you have 2 monitors, the difference between running the game in exclusive fullscreen and fullscreen window/borderless window is much more noticeable.
Either way, fullscreen window means it doesn’t minimise the game when you alt-tab. It just brings another window to the foreground.
Exclusive fullscreen can have better game performance than windowed mode. But I find a small performance drop is worth it for a smoother user experience.
will try this. thanks!
I had this issue earlier this year. Turned out it was a bug with discord. If you have that open, try closing the app and then tab out from your game to see if it’s still acting up. It drove me nuts until it was fixed.
