Some water got on and possibly in my laptop since some soup spilled in my backpack. It wasn’t much so I thought it was okay and turned it on after drying it with paper towels. After ~3-5min a little bit of smoke came out the side where you plug in the charger. I then turned the laptop off immediately and put it over a towel. I did not see a latch to remove the battery so I didn’t. I’m awful with technology and afraid of damaging my laptop more, anyway.

On the internet I see that you are supposed to wait for at least 24 hours for the laptop to dry, however I don’t have the luxury of waiting so long because I need to use my laptop for school.

Is there anything else I can do? Will my laptop be okay or do I need to buy a new one?

If the magic smoke came out, you’re probably out of luck.

I’m sure the school will understand if you tell them your laptop is broken. Most schools have spare computers for that, at least around here.
