So I was trying to install a ram using a screwdriver and it accidentally slipped. It hit a place close to where the ram was going to be put on. I made the fatal mistake of leaving the laptop on and it made a spark. After the spark it immediately turned off. It smoked a little but there’s no sign of damage on motherboard.

After the spark it does nothing when turned on. The power indicator is on/white and the battery indicator doesn’t turn on even when the battery is connected. Nothing except the hdd seems to be working but when checking the other parts they do seem to have power running through them.

With the battery connected, I can power the laptop on and off(If it’s state can even be called on) but with the adapter connected and the battery disconnected the laptop turns on again automatically after I force shut it down.

Is there a way to actually fix this or do I need to replace the motherboard?

Why were you installing ram with the laptop powered on?

You kiled your motherboard. A new board + installation is gonna cost almost as much as a new computer or close enough that you’ll wan to buy a new computer.

Never work in a pc while it’s powered on. Always unplug the power cord and if it’s a laptop, unplug the battery as soon as possible. You should also wear an electro static bracelet to ground you.

posts like this give me cancer. if you don’t know how to do something, watch a few youtube videos. i just learned how to check pressure in my fridge freon and refill it (tiny leak, needs yearly refill). this is a bonehead move and you should take it as a lesson. i mean, you didn’t even turn off the machine while opening it up and connecting shit to the mobo? most ram is not hot-swappable.

you should stop doing any computer repairs until you’ve got at least 50 hours of videos under your belt. this is super basic stuff.
