Hi all,
I’m looking to add an additional SSD to my Dell XPS 8950 and looking for some reassurance that I’m understanding things correctly. After looking at [the specifications](https://www.dell.com/support/manuals/en-uk/xps-8950-desktop/xps-8950-setup-and-specifications/storage?guid=guid-df903cc2-226d-400b-9a83-1fcf31c562c2&lang=en-us/) I think a Samsung 990 Pro 2TB with heatsink would fit - it’s also on Black Friday sale and has great reviews. Is anybody able to confirm? I’ve checked and there is an available slot on the motherboard (pic in comments)
Thanks!
Looking at your specifications, it looks like your motherboard should have another m.2 slot that is an m.2 2280. Take a picture of your other m.2 slot to be completely sure. It might even have 3 m.2 slots, as it says different XPS 8950 configurations can have different slots. But the M.2 configuration should have at least ONE 2280 m.2 slot.
Thanks, the PC came with a 1TB 2280 SSD and a 1TB HDD. Here’s a photo of the SSD that’s already there. I’m looking to add another SSD to the free slot, but just want to make sure I’m buying the right thing
I don’t see another m.2 slot in that picture. I can see the one with the card in it already, that one is clearly 2230
edit- I saw the other pic you posted of the free slot, thats also 2230
The 990 won’t fit in the slot pictured. The 990 is designed for a 2280 M.2. slot, the slot pictured is a 2230 form factor. The SSDs for a 2230 slot is a lot shorter than a 2280.
Forgive me if I’m misunderstanding, but I thought that slot could fit either? The larger outline is 2280 sized and it has tags for both, circled red here:
Are you sure? To me it looks like the motherboard supports either 2230 or 2280.
