As stated in the title.

I first booted my PC up today and it was frozen at the sign-in screen. So I had to force shutdown and restarted it.

Everything worked fine after but it immediately froze again after I plugged in a USB dongle for my wireless mouse. I force-restarted and it worked fine once again.

After few more tests, it seems that the PC would freeze/crash whenever I plug in any USB device through any of the USB ports whether on the motherboard or through the case front ports. A force shutdown and restart would then get me in no problem with all connected USB devices working normally without issue.

My PC was working fine for years until today. Board is MSI Z370 SLI PLUS. I have updated the BIOS, issue persisted.

Any idea what could be causing the problem here? PSU, MOBO, or software/drivers issue? How can I fix this?

Sounds like a bad USB but it would be easiest to check with another computer or usb. Does a different usb freeze your pc? Does the bad usb in a different computer freeze it?

Check the usb serial bus drivers in the device manager and see if there are any yellow lights next to them. But in either case click on them all and then attempt to update the drivers.

IF that doesnt do anything, there could be a short somewhere on one of the wires or connections. Your’e going to have to open the case and make sure everything is throughly connected properly not touching anything that may cause a short.
