i got a new prebuilt pc with a 7 7700x cpu and a 4060 gpu. i was stress testing it with minecraft shaders (non raytracing) and getting 6 fps so i checked the task manager and saw the amd integrated graphics peaking out so i disabled the part in device manager and restarted my pc. my pc now won’t get past the boot screen. did i completely ruin it?

No, you just revealed to yourself that you’ve bveen using the wrong video output this whole time. It’s ok to use the integrated one in the motherboard for secondary monitors and such, but the primary monitor should be plugged into the GPU itself. If you don’t have the right cable get one or an adapter. You’ve basically been idling your video card. Prepare for a world of difference once you get it plugged in correctly.

Nah, current OS versions both linux and windows can use the primary gpu even if a monitor is connected to another gpu. It usually works fine, but there may be some issues if the OS decides to use the wrong gpu for an application. There is a performance difference but probably not much in most cases, it is similar to how it works on laptops with dedicated gpus.

    Glad you solved it

And just so that you know: people have been able to point out the exact problem so quickly because you are definitely not alone in encountering this same exact issue, so don’t worry

That’s actually funny, I remembered to set my GPU as the primary one the first time I got it by trying a Minecraft shader too lol. My monitor doesn’t have HDMI so I had to plug it into the motherboard and manually tell games that didn’t automatically recognize my setup to use my GPU.

P.S: I swear if someone says I wasn’t using my GPU even when I selected it in games, you are wrong. The performance, task manager (maybe sometimes tho) and noise don’t lie.

wait a 7700X with integrated graphics? I haven’t been keeping up with the PC parts market for a bit. Last i checked that should be a G and not an X if it has integrated graphics?

I would have gotten a G series if they didn’t have lower performance since I want to use VFIO. Having two video outputs is the easiest way to do it.

Otherwise you can soft reboot the GPU. Doing that use to require a lot of tricks on top of an already complicated process.

I know the main issue was solved but I think your Minecraft issue is from not having OpenGL set to your main GPU for Minecraft in the NVidia control panel.

Oh the memories! I made the same mistake as you when I built my first PC at age 16. Except then it wouldn’t even show an image as the iGPU was disabled automatically when a GPU was plugged in.

newbie tip: if you disable your integrated graphics on a desktop, expect the motherboard hdmi port not sending a signal. why? because that is the display port of the integrated graphics!

Can you re enable it if you dont have a 2nd video output device without wiping the firmware settings? On my old PC the graphics card died but could still get into the BIOS using it. I accidentally disabled integrated graphics so when I removed the graphics card I had no output anymore.

Booting into safe mode or reinstalling windows would have fixed your integrated GPU removal issue. But yeah, glad you found your actual GPU in the end hehe.
