So I was viewing reddit and stumbled upon a link leading to another reddit page so I scanned it with virustotal (clear) and clicked on it. It did bring me to a reddit page but I noticed it was http. The weird thing is that the page also had a https version. So now I am confused on whether it was safe I entered a http website and also why there are two identical pages but one with http and another https.
Not all HTTP websites are unsafe, it just means that its not encrypted, but HTTPS is. A HTTPS website can be unsafe too
It may be ‘safe’ but absent HTTPS, you can’t be 100% sure of the site’s ownership and your traffic is unencrypted.
What if it’s simply for viewing and I didn’t click any links or enter any info. Is it safe then
Don’t share valuable information on a http site. That information is unencrypted.
Websites can respond to both HTTPS and HTTP without issue. Over HTTP, the information you send and receive is human-readable if anybody is intercepting the communication. Also, HTTPS certificates allows to verify the ownership of that website to a certain extent (or at least that the website that you’re reaching is not being spoofed)
What is the domain? Reddit.com has an HSTS header so compliant browsers shouldn’t even connect with HTTP.
Unsure how to check domain but I am pretty sure it’s reddit
Wait now that I recheck again when you copy and paste the link it’s http but when you enter the site it turns into https. I didn’t know the link would change from http to https.
