a friend of mine got a virus that seems to have encrypted all of his files with a .gycc extension at the end of each, is it over for him?

quite a specialist subject, there are guides on how to deal with it, but if you are unable to use a search engine, then would format all drives as they are all out of reach.

this will be the time to see how good your backups are.

.gycc cannot be decrypted, because it is a newer variant of the Djvu ransomware family. Newer ransomwares of the aforementioned family uses online ID, which is IMPOSSIBLE to decrypt according to Emsisoft’s decryptor. Your friend’s data is toast.
