BLUF: For about 6-10 months I’ve had random reboots of my PC that are not accompanied by BSOD. The PC just cuts power (from my perception), the motherboard displays the same LED codes as it would during a normal boot up, and then I’m back at my login screen. I haven’t been successful in isolating variables and diagnosing/fixing the issue. No changes in hardware coincided with the timeline of things messing up.

Sometimes, definitely not all of the time, if I’m watching a video or playing a game, there will be a brief, 2-5 second period of repeated audio jumping like a broken record player, signifying a reset incoming. Other times, it is just a clean, sudden cut and restart.

Relevant Component Specs:
- OS: Win 10 Pro
- Mobo: Asrock x570 Creator
- CPU: Ryzen 9 5950X
- GPU: EVGA RTX 3090 FTW3
- RAM: Corsair LPX 2x16GB 3200MHZ
- PSU: Maingear Ignition 1200W
- UPS: Cyberpower CP1500PFCLCDa
- Storage: I’ve got 2x NVME, 2x 2.5-inch SSDs, 1x 2.5-inch HDD, and 2x 3-inch HDD; nothing that should be overpowering the system.
When it happens:
Seemingly randomly… happens while gaming with videos or recording on in the background, but also happens when I’m just sitting and reading an article in a browser. Happens when I get up and leave nothing running and walk away from my PC.
It is surprisingly hard for me to induce the problem manually and have something cause the restart. I have separately run programs like BOINC, Sheep-It, Cinebench, and mining software to max out my CPU. Have concurrently run AI model training/rendering, handbrake encoding, games, and benchmarks to max out my GPU. Neither separately nor together force the PC to shut down when they are all maxed out.

I recently just got back from a 10-day trip way from home where I left my PC running the entire time was gone, with VPN on and programs pegging CPU and GPU at 100% the entire time. I remoted in a few times and when I got home, uptime indicated no restarts had occurred. First reset occurred again today after I had been actively using the PC for about 12ish hours. This is not always typical as I will leave my computer locked with absolutely nothing running when I go to sleep and come back in the morning to find it was reset.
I’m just saying all those examples to express that it really, truly seems random.
Fixes I’ve tried, variables I’ve attempted to isolated, patterns I tried to track, etc.:
- When the restart happens in front of my face, sometimes I am sitting idle at 45C for CPU and 27C for GPU, so I don’t think it’s a temp issue.
- Same as above, RAM will sometimes be at 30% utilization when it happens, so I don’t think I’m overloading my resources.
- I recently ran some back-to-back Memtests that all failed, so did the RMA with Corsair and got a new set of sticks. New stuff passes every time, but the issue persists.
- While I was waiting on the RMA, I had a different set of G.Skill 2x16GB 3600MHz in there and the same issue happened.
- I’ve run sfc/scannow and all of the CLI stuff I could search for.
- I’ve turned off background processing when I walk away like BOINC, discord, my browser, and my VPN, etc., but the issue still happens when I’m away sometimes.
- I’ve temporarily paused my Macrium backup schedule which shoots an image of my boot drive to an HDD.
- I’ve opened up my case and looked around for shorted wires or wires missing their insulation.
- Updating everything… Windows, Java, C++ libraries, etc.
- Offloading nearly every game I have installed from Steam, Ubi, Epic, etc.
- Uninstalling development software and pentesting tools that I’m not actively using.
- I can’t remember what else I’ve done at the moment but I’ll update if I do.
Things I suspect I’ll soon have to try as well, but am entirely not sure if they contribute to the issue:
- Contacting Maingear and explaining the situation so I can RMA the PSU.
- Swapping my GPU with another GPU (I can borrow a 2070S from another system but it will be a pain).
- Same as above but with a CPU from another system
- One-by-one removing/replacing small periphs like my mouse, mic interface, keyboard, camera, capture card.
- Uninstalling more programs.
