hi so I’m new to Reddit so let me know if I’m doing this wrong but I have an Xbox which my little sister dropped nails into the holes on the top of it and apparently it was making a scratchy noise then I was told it’s fixed and I didn’t hear scratching noises myself then I just got it back tried to log in as soon as I did it went off and smelt burning . It’s currently unplugged and turned off is there anyway to fix this or to remove the nails that I’m assuming are still in there (I’m not sure if this is even the right group thingy) anyways any tips are appreciated

Unplug it, take out the screws and take the cover off, you should be able to remove any nails, and hopefully it still works Metal touching the motherboard is not a good thing

Thank you so much I appreciate it I have taken it apart and luckily the only nail was in the fan so pretty easy to remove. Thank you so much for the help!

Something inside shorted out and blew up. The smoke you’re smelling is the burnt silicon and plastic from the chip that popped.

Do not plug the system back in.

Contact Microsoft to ask about repair options.

It is possible for a skilled electronics tech to fix an Xbox. If you’re asking /r/techsupport for help, you are not skilled enough to fix this.

Please don’t risk a house fire. Leave this to the professionals.

      Bit of an overreaction.

Unplug it, Take it apart, remove the nails, put it together, try it out.

If they got to the point of turning it off, rather than it turning off on its own, it’s likely fine, and the smell could have been from a few different things. No indication that anything popped.

        Re-read the OP’s post.

The system instantly went dark, and there was a burning smell. That’s exactly how a system behaves when a FET pops.
