Hey Reddit!

I am in the process of transferring media between my personal computer and a server. The files are on a Samsung 860 EVO SSD on my personal rig, and being transferred to a USB 3.1 compatible USB drive, through a USB 3.1 port. I am getting speeds bouncing around between 30-50 Mb/s. When I plug the same USB stick into a USB 3.0 port on my server, and transferring the files into a external WD MyBook plugged into a USB 3.0 port, I get speeds up to 150Mb/s. The server is a bit dated, but it does have Dual Xeon E5-2620 v3 CPUs vs a Ryzen 5 3600x in my personal rig. Could this be the difference? I still feel like I should be seeing much better speeds on my rig, and I just don’t get it. Gone through every step I could find on online guides to no avail. Anyone have any thoughts? Thanks in advance!

It looks like the wd my book is a standard hard drive, not an ssd so 150 MB/s (Megabytes per second) is right

What model is the other usb hard drive you are using on your personal pc?

i’m positive it’s a usb 3.1 port. the hard drive in the other PC is a SATA SSD, not an external HDD. That’s why im so confused by the slower speeds

Not really useful but I get different USB transfer speeds depending on which pc I use. Maybe just make sure you use a usb 3.0 port and make sure it is a usb 3.0 port not just coloured blue. No idea why they are different.
