My computer decided to celebrate Christmas early by dying. It was working a few days ago.

I built myself about a year and a half years ago.

  • GIGABYTE X570 AORUS Ultra
  • AMD Ryzen 9 5900X
  • EVGA RTX 3080 Ti XC3
  • G.SKILL Ripjaws V Series 32GB (2 x 16GB) 288-Pin PC RAM DDR4 3200

Here are the symptoms:

When I turn on power supply, lights come on, fans spin up, USB is powered, eject button on the drives works. Everything seems to be powered except my front panel add-on with more USB.

When I push the power button, nothing happens. No beeps. Nothing on the monitor. No light on the motherboard changes & nothing powers on or off as far as I can tell.

My guess is failed power supply because I don’t think any of this other stuff is supposed to be powered unless the computer is on. My power supply is still the one from the original build back in 2012 & it’s 750W, which I think is borderline for this configuration. Wish I knew for sure before I bought one a new, though. Any ideas?

    Try a capacitance reset.

Unplug all cables from your PC, press and hold the power button for 10 seconds, release, replug everything, and try and start it up.

Due to power being controlled by software, rather than a hard switch that physically stops the power flow, occasionally PC’s can glitch out and not shut down fully. Doing the above removes residual current from the motherboard that may be causing it to hang.
