I hope I read this situation right that OpenAI is trying to avoid getting dragged further into the for-profit corporate machinery. In the light of all the ClosedAI memes, I’m so confused why the majority seems to cheer for Sam. He’s the guy that turns startups into billion dollar companies.
Yeah it’s sad. It’s just revealed that most people are firmly stuck in the narrow minded venture capitalist induced mindset of startup success means highest validation possible. When literally the reason all this happened was to assert that that is not what openAI was meant to be
Because the alternative is that you’ll never see the models they develop. You’ll hear about it in the news once something goes wrong if ever.
I don’t see how the for-profit goals align with being better for everyone. The publicly available models seem to be at least 6 months behind the latest developments, and how they’re built is a complete secret. The public doesn’t get to see anything and it’s accelerating who knows where behind the scenes.
I see how what the board did was terrible, because it was seemingly just destructive with no way back. The board being wrong doesn’t mean Sam is some kind of savior. I don’t see how Sam’s actions/direction are pro-humanity over just a game about controlling whatever is at the other end of this.
Here I am just hoping any of it becomes open source.
IDC about more wannabe corporate models.
We’re here in this sub because none of it will be. We’ll have to make our own.
I wouldn’t rule it out. If some company wins the big pie slices, the others might then decide the best offense is co-operation. Nothing to depend on ofc.
ok so ilya tweeted this: " I deeply regret my participation in the board’s actions. I never intended to harm OpenAI. I love everything we’ve built together and I will do everything I can to reunite the company. " i think its some positive news! and sama made hearts to it <33
We are all going to die.
Facts.
make no mistake this situation was deliberated
This sounds fishy, this whole story gets less absurd when you think about It as plotted by microsoft just to “acquire” openai without having to deal with anti-monopilistic regulation.
Rich people monopoly games. I’ll go back to my cute little local model
So it seems that a bunch of ex-openai core people will move to MS, and possibly work on the same stuff, depending on what MS has access to based on their openai investment deal. They’re most likely to focus on bringing stuff to the enterprise market fast.
At the same time what’s left of openai will put the breaks on stuff and possibly emphasise safety and slowing down. I think everyone will come out of this kerfuffle having “won” what they wanted. No idea how this will impact the overall field, but possibly some players will get a free catching-up opportunity. Maybe.
They’ll be slowed down naturally without trying from everyone leaving to join Sam at Microsoft.
If the Emmet Shear is to be believed this whole thing has nothing to do with safety.
What was it then, sabotage? The board had the entire weekend to explain why they did what they did to their employees, but chose not to. No wonder everyone in the company was pissed and signed the letter to resign.
Emmet Shear
I hadn’t followed everything but a quick google away I found this, that I assume you’re referring to:
PPS: Before I took the job, I checked on the reasoning behind the change. The board did not remove Sam over any specific disagreement on safety, their reasoning was completely different from that. I’m not crazy enough to take this job without board support for commercializing our awesome models.
Interesting. I think we’ll know more as things settle.
Whether it has to do with safety or not, Shear is seemingly more safety-conscious than Altman
Shear has said in interviews that he thinks the probability AI kills everyone in a Skynet-esque scenario (I’m paraphrasing) is between 5% and 50%
Whether recent events were motivated by safety or not, the conflict seems to have wound up being between safety-conscious and accelerationist factions
* brakes
oops, derp me. I’ll leave it as it’s funny, but thanks!
Super hot disco breaks
Please dear Tzeench, have someone leak gpt4 in general confusion, I MUST know if this is really 10 7b models in a trench coat :)
Abominable Intelligence is forbidden by the Emperor’s Decree, battle-brother.
So is praying to Tzeentch more to the point, somebody get that heretic!
It was actually just the janitor. They told him he was getting messaged on a dating app
isnt it 10 200b models in a trench coat?
depending on what MS has access to based on their openai investment deal
I think they have access to it all. Since even before all this drama, they pretty much did.
Not everyone will have “won”
End Users are going to get a even further lobotomized product and microsoft is now going to slingshot over openAI with a privatized version
Or OpenAI will revert to open source? Please little baby Jesus, let them release the GPT-4 model.
OpenAI was not gonna release shit for consumers either way, doomers are to scared of shadows to do it, and GPT3.5 was too advanced to make public by Illya.
Because Microsoft has GPT4 too, I am pretty sure they are just gonna continue working on what they were before as if nothing happened, under Microsoft, just now are not shackled and can go full steam ahead.
The doomers lost, because now the acceleration side is free and unshackled. At best, they bought 4 months, but progress might come 3x faster after those.
How would a non compete work in this agreement
Since apple has been lacking behind, i see them aggressively attempting to poach some employees.
What I want to know is, howTF does MSFT manage it’s 49% multi-$B share of OAI, and a new AI division with CEO Sam Altman at the same time? Seems like a total train wreck.
Well well well, how the wind blows through the Windows^™.
Change my mind: There was no coup. They just staged this, so it can seem like microsoft just saved a broken company, instead of looking like microsoft bribed their way to effectivly buy a nonprofit. Question is if the rest of the openai board is paid for in money, or was threatened to comply. I imagine you can kill quite a lot of someones family, with no evidence leading back to you for that kinda budget.
I wouldn’t doubt this. I mean barely trust any news to be facts anymore even if it is “the truth”.
This is how we get the ship computer. Now all we need is a ship.
Oh I wish we can get the scoop on the internal gossips… seems pretty juicy under the covers.
This was a serious coup, even if it doesn’t look like it. It may also mean MS may get on wrong foot with OpenAi…
Maybe MSFT will put Sam in charge of managing the Open AI relationship. Microsoft must have some say in how their $10B investment is used lol.
Microsoft must have some say in how their $10B investment is used lol.
In general, the way these work is in stages. It’s not like an investor hands over the full wad of cash in one go. It’s done in stages. Milestones are laid out and as each one is met they get the next installment of money. So investors have a lot of say about about it.
It may also mean MS may get on wrong foot with OpenAi…
I think they were already there with the coup leaders. My understanding is that Sam being so cosy with Microsoft was one of the big reasons for the coup. Sam was the force at OpenAI behind Microsoft’s involvement in the company. That commercialization was at odds with the other board members non-commercial aims.
Total clown fiesta 🤡
