For years now, my ram usage has been constantly going up, regardless of if I have apps on or not. When I first got my laptop, with everything closed it had 30% ram usage. Nowadays, with everything closed it’s around 55%-60%, with no real processes going on. When any application is on, it goes up to 85-90%, with games 93% or up.
Once it reaches above 93% it goes into a mega slow mode on my laptop where it takes minute for things to unfreeze and I have to wait around 3 minutes after closing a game to regain some semblance of speed on my laptop. I’m not sure what’s going on and it’s just been getting worse over the years.
Any advice? (I counted, when I have discord + opera + steam on it adds 2.2 gb in active process - I have a total of 8 gb of ram. Where is the rest of the ram being used? If 55% is the baseline, where are the 4,4 gbs going??
Do you have integrated graphics? A slice of the RAM will be reserved for that. To run windows with a light workload you need 8GB without it being siphoned off by iGPUs. The new minimum for laptops at work is 16GB.
At home my primary desktop is 48GB and my personal laptop is 64GB.
Bottom line is do less with your laptop as is or upgrade the RAM as much as you can.
Open Resource monitor to list the more detailed info. RAMMap from Sysinternals can be useful too.
8 GB of RAM doesn’t cut it these days. You’re looking at wanting 16 GB as a minimum for a general use computer or 32 GB for a gaming computer. I suggest looking up your model of laptop online to see if you’re able to upgrade your RAM. Some computers’ RAM is soldered and nonupgradable.
