With the news on the executive order targeting AI, would now be a good time to create a local instance for myself which would not be neutered or reduced to useless due to these orders? If so, what should I set my sights on to not waste time with smaller instances?
Yet another hobby slowly circling the drain, kinda like quadcopters and 3d printing.
There’s really no defense here as we are dependent on large companies to train foundation models. Guess we gotta git gud at removing alignment because it’s bound to get worse.
I’ve kept out of AI/ML related discussions because honestly I know little about it short of the sysadm back end of making things work.
However I can say I’ve been around the Internet since the mid/late 90s - seeing what could be wonderful and amazing technologies neutered and destroyed by regulation and censorship has made me sad. So much so I - like so many others - saw this coming at its inception.
Oh well, I’ll keep building small labs with used Teslas to do silly things with until those are illegal to buy.
Very interesting you mention the two prior hobbies I jumped on board with as well! Ha!
Can open source development just be done outside of US?
But, an executive order is not a permanent law and generally only lasts the length of Biden’s administration.
So let’s calm down for a second. This is a non-binding resolution. Biden could make a non-binding resolution that we all have to buy my little ponies. That doesn’t mean you have to buy a My Little pony. And you have to remember we have a pretty big war coming up. Not that it’s a great thing, but everyone’s going to be worried about something else for the next year or maybe 10. As soon as things get really exciting, they’re not going to worry about AI. The US government probably won’t pass a budget much less be able to agree on anything. So I would shore up the models you want to keep and invest in companies who are willing to build out and go their own way.
It’s an executive order about AI used by federal government.
