Hey there! I hope this is a quick and simple one — I know little to nothing about computer hardware, so it really is a complete noob question, it might be a super stupid one! But better safe than sorry. :)
My cat is a little bastard and I caught him chewing on … well, I had to google it, I think it’s called a ferrite bead? Those little cylinder blocks on laptop charging cables, mine has two (one at the top where the charging plug is, one halfway down where it connects to the power brick), I am unsure whether both serve the same purpose. Thankfully he only put a few dents into the plastic so far, I can see no genuine damage.
To prevent him from further damaging it when I’m not looking, I sewed two 1.5mm thick (genuine) leather sleeves for the cylinders. Like this: [IMAGE] It slides tightly onto the cylinder. My question is: Is this harmful?
My thought is: If the cylinders in any way work as a heat sink, or otherwise can overheat, I’m fearing covering them would be bad. But maybe I’m over-thinking it!
Thanks! :)
Did he chew through the cable?
The ferrite thingamajigs don’t really do anything, but AFAIK they are made of metal and not plastic.
You should be more worried about the power cable. The cable between the wall socket and the charger brick carries 110V or even 220V AC depending on your country and could literally electrocute your kitty cat.
The ferrite cores suppress low frequency and absorb high frequency EMF that might be present in the charging cable to reduce interference. The leather cover won’t hurt anything. I’d be surprised if your cat could damage the ferrite core, more likely it’d damage the cats teeth.
