If you’re concerned by the web browser of your choosing taking and profiting off your data. Make your own browser.

No there isn’t a way you can 100% guarantee it. If youre worried about privacy there are other browsers focused on privacy.

People need to understand this already: is a piece of software free? The product is you.

Simple as that. If you’re using a non-FOSS software that is free, it is gathering your data and profiting off of you. Period.

Dont want that? Dont use that software.

Either this, or it’s open source… Open source is all the good of the internet combined in one product

Plenty of FOSS gathers your data too.

the whole point of FOSS is that you can literally see the code and decide if you’re ok with what it does, and even change it and recompile if you want.

There is no way to guarantee this. They spend a lot of money on the browser so why would they not want to make money off of it?

    Your data.

What you search for, which sites are most popular, what are most people interested in, etc.

Your usage, combined with everyone else’s, provides them with a snapshot of what people are interested in, their spending habits, their screen time, etc etc. this allows them to monetise you more effectively and to sell this data to other people who can subsequently monetise you more effectively.

Edge is the metaphorical survey that tells you 20% of people in your chip shop searched for “vegan saveloy” before coming into your premises to order a portion of chips. From this data you know you can increase sales by adding a vegan saveloy to the menu.
