I don’t know if this is the right subreddit for this type of question, I apologize if it’s not. But I’m wondering which operating system dominates more in the server market. Thanks.
Pay for Microsoft SQL server hyperscale and you’ll quickly understand why most companies use linux, postgres, mariadb, mysql, etc
MS licensing fees are nuts.
Linux has a significant presence in the server market, particularly in web servers, cloud computing, and supercomputing. Many cloud services, including those from major players like AWS, GCP, and Microsoft Azure, heavily rely on Linux-based infrastructure.
However, Windows Server has a stronger presence in enterprise environments, especially in businesses that are heavily invested in Microsoft’s ecosystem (like using Active Directory, Exchange, etc.).
Most web servers and cloud servers use Linux, but most domain servers use Windows Server. It really depends on what market share you’re talking about. It would probably be hard to estimate the global server market share
We don’t run any WS on our internal infra, Linux/Unix in the enterprise space has a much higher usage than Windows, hands down
