(Feel free to delete post if not allowed) Looking at internet plans for 1 person and wondering if 16mps is good enough for mainly youtube and TV use?

Where do you live that you’re considering 16 Mbps. Where I am I pay about 13€ a month for 300 Mbps.

It’s enough for 1080p. The bitrates offered by YT and most streaming services are garbage anyways.

For downloading large files, such a low bandwidth is a pita.

Fair warning, when Windows downloads updates or anything else downloads it’ll suck. Schedule those for overnight.

It’s workable, but 20-30Mbps would be nicer if you do any streams, discord screen share, gaming, zoom meetings etc. If you do not regularly do this, you’ll probably be fine just have to get used to buffering sometimes.

I’d also buy a flash drive and download large things elsewhere, either public wifi or a friend with faster speeds.

Only streaming service I can think of that you might have an issue on is crunchy roll there 1080p stuff is 1.2 GB per 24 minutes although I reckon there 720p looks better than youtube 1080 and there 480p still looks great just a bit blurry just no artifacts.

YouTube and TV will work amazingly at 1080p, maybe some 60 FPS videos sped up could be problematic but for the most part no issues

Yes, I just tested it on my SonicWALL by setting bandwidth throttling to 15Mbps, then opening a couple tabs on YouPorn, worked smooth!

Keep in mind you may not always have 16 Mbps if that’s what the plan quotes. I pay for 400 and often am getting 230.

Yeah it’s enough, but of 16 Mbps is your max speed, that a crime to the humanity (in 2023).

For TV it’s just about the bare minimum, for youtube is more than enough.

The main difference between both is that youtube will downscale you all the way down to 240p if you connection is bad. TV will just keep buffering if you don’t have the bandwidth.
